Last week In Detail headed to West London to meet Louisa Richwhite, the creative mind behind the dark and quirky brand Violet Darkling. Her flat, with painted black glossy walls and animal memorabilia on every surface offered an intriguing insight into her magical childhood and the wonderful world of Violet Darkling.

Tell us a little more about Violet Darkling and how you came up with the name?

I always wanted the brand to be about the night. I’m nocturnal myself. Everything I create has a really strong theme so it needed to be catchy. Violet Darkling is a creature of the night who’s obsessed with animals, the darkness and the unknown. She’s a reflection of me – only crazier.

Who do you design for?

Myself. The best thing about having my own company I can design exactly what I want. It might sound selfish, arrogant or vain but it’s important that there is consistency in my work, and this is the best way of controlling that. It’s also what makes the jewellery stand out. I’m not designing for anyone specific other than Violet Darkling, my alter-ego! It’s not for the masses, not everyone is going to want to wear a skull ring with a pave bone in its mouth but that’s all part of the appeal. It’s so cool to be able to design stuff I want to wear and it’s amazing when other people want to wear it too.

How would you describe the people who wear Violet Darkling?
Gutsy and a bit rock and roll.

You have a fabulous collection of cufflinks for the men. Tell us a bit more about that?

Violet Darkling is a unisex brand although we target it at women. It has been particularly popular in Russia where we have had orders for the rings in men’s sizes. We also had a pair of Fossa rings commissioned as wedding rings. The cufflinks are part of the overall collection using the same motifs to the jewellery. Men’s cufflinks can be so standard so if you are a guy that has to wear a shirt but want to incorporate a bit of style into your outfit then our cufflinks are for you!

Personal jewellery style?
Selective. It always has to match what I’m wearing so it’s the last thing I put on. I wear candy colours mixed with black.

What inspires you?

I’m obsessed with the stars because I live on an island in New Zealand and there are no lights from the city. The sky is so clear, you see a shooting star every two minutes, it’s amazing. I’ve always been obsessed with animals. I’ve grown up surrounded by horses, rabbits and dogs and I have hundreds of books with images of nocturnal animals. I collect bones, skulls and I’m into taxidermy not because it’s trendy and cool but because I feel like I have got more animals with me! Everything in my house is to do with animals.

How do you go about designing a collection?

I don’t design in London as everything is go, go, go here so I don’t have time to sit down and focus. I do all my designing either in the country in Sussex or at home in New Zealand. In both places I’m in isolation and surrounded by the things that inspire me. I just start drawing and the more I sit down and focus the more creative I become. Once I come up with a design it takes me forever to narrow down because everything has to be just so.

Your jewellery is an expression of your childhood and the things that inspired you growing up – what made you translate that into jewellery?

I studied fashion design and never thought about jewellery. I hardly ever really wore any either. I am such a perfectionist that for my final collection at university I designed everything from swimwear and underwear to hats and shoes so I had to design some jewellery too! A friend made them for me and afterwards I started wearing them. I got so many compliments that my business partner Nick and I decided to make a few more and it just took off.

Tell us a about the new collection.

I have created three new Violet Darkling characters that are coming out together. They are all thieves of the night! There are similar motifs running through the new collection but I wanted to make it a bit more cutesy and girly so the ultimate was bringing pearls in. It’s slightly more main stream but still has a big smack of Violet Darkling, which will hopefully draw in a crowd who might not necessarily wear a skull ring but likes the underlying vibe of the company.

Where did your passion for jewellery originate from?

I always had a passion for jewellery but before going to Central St Martins and the Royal College of Art I initially trained as a fashion stylist inspired by my great grandmother who set up the first beauty school after WW2. I didn’t like the fact that you didn’t have a tangible product at the end so I asked myself ’what i really wanted to do.’ I looked at vehicle design but that was quite male oriented and fashion but there were already hundreds of people doing it. At the time the jewellery scene hadn’t really exploded so I decided to train as a jeweller.

Which designers are you most excited about at the moment?

We get approached by so many brands so we are very careful about how we curate the site. We have all the usual suspects Tomasz Donocik, Ana de Costa, Tina Lillenthal who are some of my favourites. Violet Darkling is a really interesting brand with a very nice proposition. Their marketing piece and story has been really nicely put together. Another favourite is fashion jeweller Sahani who creates incredible catwalk pieces for Victoria’s secret. She is incredibly talented and so incredibly modest. I am very fond of Sho fine jewellery of which we stock both their bespoke and main line collection. Jessica de Lotz is adorable and a creative genius; she lives, breaths and creates her brand. As you can see it would be hard for me to pick a firm favourite.

Goats up a tree!

UNBELEAFABLE! This tree is groaning under the weight of NINE hungry goats.

The adventurous animals had climbed the Moroccan Argan tree to tuck into its leaves and olive-like fruit.

One even made it to the very top of the 17ft plant.

The animals — better known for navigating mountain ranges — head into trees when food is hard to come by.

Photographer Gavin Oliver was driving through Morocco when he spotted the scene by the side of the road.

The 38-year-old snapper, from Sydney, Australia, said: "There were about 30 goats, with the ones in the tree already in place when we were driving past.

"The tree branches were bobbing up and down under the weight of the goats every time they moved."

"The herd of goats were being looked after by a young teenage shepherd, who you can just make out behind the tree."

It certainly seems that Ksyusha the kitten has got herself into an impossibly tight spot.

But according to her owner she has no problem escaping the glass container,

rather like a feline Houdini.

‘It looks like she is stuck, but actually her body is not as big as it looks because of the large amount of fur,’ said Yuriy Korotun, who lives in Moscow.

‘She likes hiding in different places and is full of character.’

Yuriy said he first realised his pet, a Himalayan breed similar to a Persian, had a love of confined spaces when he heard a commotion in her kitchen one day.

‘I came in to find her in the jar,’ he said. ‘I couldn’t believe my eyes.’

Oooh how I just love this jewellery! The designs are just so unique, stylish, trendy, totally against the normal conventions of jewellery design. A little unorthadox perhaps, what with the use of animal skulls as a focal point, but different nonetheless. And it’s this difference which caught my eye while I was browsing on some of my favourite blogs and websites. My favorites are the ring above, and the spider and bow earrings. Imagine receiving something like this as a gift? That’s be my kind of heaven.

Louisa Richwhite is the mastermind designer, from New Zealand, who creates these gorgeous and quirky jewellery. Mostly inspired by things and creatures in the night, and also by spending time living in New Zealand, Switzerland and England. This is definitely one name to keep your eye on, and worth adding to your wishlist.

Bike to the future.

No your eyes are not deceiving you, that is indeed a bike being wheeled down the
catwalk of the AW12 PPQ show. How very North London of them!

The bikes were a collaboration with lifestyle brand RULE, 100 of the bikes

will be available to order in March...... at a cool £1500.

With a mixed bag of embellishment, tailoring and tasteful flowing

gowns; yet again PPQ did not disappoint.

Typically for PPQ there were a few very out-there looks, like the cream, off the shoulder

unitard along with beautifully embellished tights. Equally zany were the PVC

knickers that were teamed up with a feminine bodice.

Shrove Tuesday - Pancake Day

Happy Pancake Day.......or should I say Shrove Tuesday!

We know you probably know how to make pancakes with your eyes
closed, but if you don't, there is no need to panic!

Read up. Get shopping. Start eating!

Basic pancake batter - 8 pancakes

You will need -

1 large egg or 1 egg and one yolk

½ pint/280ml milk

4oz/110g plain flour (4 heaped dessertspoons)

1 tbsp melted butter

1. By hand: sift the flour into a bowl and make a well in the middle.

2. Break in the egg (and yolk, if using) and add a pinch of salt and a splash of the milk.

3. Whisk the egg, gradually incorporating the flour, to make a smooth cream.

4. Whisk in the rest of the milk and the melted butter.

5. Ladle the mixture into a buttered frying pan..... Bon appetit!

Fantastic Mr Fox.

These cute little critters, or should i say The Fennec Fox, are a world away from

the screeching Vixens that echo around the streets of London.

We thought we would give these little beauties a voice, read up, swot up and fall in love!

The fennec fox is the smallest of all the world's foxes, but its large ears, measuring 6 inches (15 centimeters), appear to be on loan from a bigger relative.

Fennec foxes dwell in the sandy Sahara and elsewhere in North Africa. Their nocturnal habits help them deal with the searing heat of the desert environment, and some physical adaptations help as well.

Their distinctive, batlike ears radiate body heat and help keep the foxes cool. They also have long, thick hair that insulates them during cold nights and protects them from hot sun during the day. Even the fox's feet are hairy, which helps them perform like snowshoes and protects them from extremely hot sand. The fox's feet are also effective shovels for
frequent digging—fennec foxes live in underground dens.

These foxes dwell in small communities, each inhabited by perhaps ten individuals. Like other canids, male fennecs mark their territory with urine and become aggressive competitors when mating season arrives each year.

Fennec foxes are opportunistic eaters. They forage for plants but also eat rodents, eggs, reptiles, and insects. Like most desert dwellers, the fennec fox has developed the ability to go for long periods without water.

These foxes are cream-colored with black-tipped tails. Their adorable appearance makes them favorites of the captive pet trade, and local peoples also hunt the fennec fox for its fur. Little is known about the status of wild fennec fox populations.

After Christmas sales can be a bargain hunter's dream. The deals, the coupons and, oh, the percentages off on everything! Learn to survive the after Christmas sales while getting some great deals and keeping your sanity intact.

Things You'll Need:

Comfortable shoes and clothing
A snack and a bottle of water

Think of what you actually need or want to buy, even before the after Christmas sales event. Make a list and be specific, listing model numbers and colors of items.
Go through your list and consider what stores might carry that item. Search online if the store has a Web site and try to plan ahead.
List your items in order of importance. This will help you decide which stores you will visit.
Pay attention to which stores seem to have big Christmas sales. They will probably also have big after Christmas sales.
Watch sale circulars and commercials the week of Christmas. This is when the stores will start announcing their after Christmas sales.
Decide to go to the "big box" stores that open early first, as you can hit smaller stores later. Crowds will increase around mid-day and last through the afternoon.
Shop online if possible and avoid the lines, parking and crowds. Get up early on December 26 to place your order; you won't be the only one doing this.

Cookie Cottage How-To

1. With a serrated knife, saw a graham cracker into 2 squares. Saw off top corners of another cracker to create a peaked roof; make 2.

2. Pipe icing onto bottom and straight edges of a peaked piece. Place on an upside-down paper plate; use a small object, such as a spice jar, to prop it up. Repeat to pipe icing onto edges of a square piece, and adhere it to peaked cracker. Remove spice jar, and adhere other pieces with icing.

3. Saw a cracker into 2 squares for the roof. If desired, spread icing onto roof pieces and decorate with candy; let dry. Pipe icing onto top edges of house, and adhere roof pieces. To display, place plates on a tray and cover with shredded coconut snow.

Who said Eggnog can't be naughty?

They say that practise makes perfect and with 22 days of festive partying left,

what better way to start the weekend than with a big fat Eggnog Martini!

You will need:

1 cup sugar
1/4 cup cornstarch
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon pumpkin-pie spice, plus more for garnish
8 cups whole milk
6 large egg yolks
3 cups brandy

Method:

Set a large fine-mesh sieve over a large bowl. Place bottom of bowl in an ice bath; set aside. Off heat, in a medium saucepan, whisk together sugar, cornstarch, nutmeg, and pumpkin-pie spice. Gradually whisk in 4 cups milk, taking care to incorporate the cornstarch. Whisk in egg yolks.
Whisking constantly, cook over medium heat until the first large bubble sputters, 10 to 12 minutes. Reduce heat to low; cook, whisking constantly, 1 minute more. Remove from heat; immediately pour through sieve into bowl. Stir in remaining 4 cups milk. Let cool completely in bowl still set in ice bath.
Just before serving, stir in brandy, and ladle into glasses; garnish with pumpkin-pie spice.

The Aye-Aye....the crazy creature of the night

Aye-ayes can be found only on the island of Madagascar. These rare animals may not look like primates at first glance, but they are related to chimpanzees, apes, and humans.

Aye-ayes are dark brown or black and are distinguished by a bushy tail that is larger than their body. They also feature big eyes, slender fingers, and large, sensitive ears. Aye-ayes have pointed claws on all their fingers and toes except for their opposable big toes, which enable them to dangle from branches.

Aye-ayes spend their lives in rain forest trees and avoid coming down to earth. They are nocturnal, and spend the day curled up in a ball-like nest of leaves and branches. The nests appear as closed spheres with single entry holes, situated in the forks of large trees.

While perched aloft, the aye-aye taps on trees with its long middle finger and listens for wood-boring insect larvae moving under the bark. It employs the same middle finger to fish them out. The digit is also useful for scooping the flesh out of coconuts and other fruits that supplement the animal's insect diet.

Many people native to Madagascar consider the aye-aye an omen of ill luck. For this reason they often have been killed on sight. Such hunting, coupled with habitat destruction, have made the aye-aye critically endangered. Today they are protected by law.

The rock chick look has been around for years, yet it doesn’t show any signs of going out of fashion. Think black leather, torn denim, spiky stilettos, smoky black eye-makeup and – of course – layers and layers of long, chunky chains. As long as we have celebs such as Florence Welch, Courtney Love, Daisy Lowe andDrew Barrymore gracing the pages of our favourite magazines, it’s likely that rock’n'roll style is here to stay.

But what if you’re getting hitched? Studs and black lace aren’t to everyone’s taste – not even for the archetypal rock chick herself, Kate Moss, who married earlier this year in a Galliano gown that was altogether more conventional than her usual skinny jean style (though the model described the 1920s vintage-inspired dress as ‘rock’n'roll Great Gatsby’).

Talking parrot woke owner with news of newborn puppies

WHO’S a clever boy then? A talking pet parrot has been hailed a hero for saving the lives of five premature puppies.

Mimicking his owner Suzanna Bolton’s voice, 18-year-old African Grey parrot Sam squawked a distress call in her ear after going upstairs and jumping onto her bed in the dead of the night.

Sam woke Suzanna with calls to ‘come on, come on’ before leading her to the pups.

Mrs Bolton’s four-year-old Pomeranian bitch Sally had gone into labour a week early and both she and her puppies were in distress on a cold and wet kitchen floor.

Mrs Bolton, 55, of Anchor Avenue, Darwen, said: “Sam is allowed to roam around out of his cage, but parrots are not known to move at night.

“That night he seemed to know what was going on and came looking for me to help.

“He’s never been in my bedroom before in the eight years I’ve had him, but he came up the stairs, climbed on the bed and started talking to me in my own voice with the words “come on, come on”, which I often say to Sally.

“I wondered what on earth was going on and took Sam back downstairs to his perch, but then he looked at me and squawked.

“It was then I looked in the kitchen and saw the puppies. One had died and the other five boys were all very, very cold and wet. I quickly got the heat pads out for them and got them next to a radiator, and luckily they’re now doing well.

“I honestly believe that if Sam hadn’t have acted how he did, then the others could have died too during the night.”

Mrs Bolton bought Sam from an Urdu speaker when he was 10 years old and he knew no English.

Now he is able to accurately mimick several members of Mrs Bolton’s family.

She added: “He knows that if my grandson shouts ‘Nana!’ then I’ll come running immediately, so when Sam wants me quickly, he uses my grandson’s voice to shout Nana too.

“It’s very, very difficult to tell the difference between Sam’s impression and the real thing.

“He’s really very intelligent and everyone says how amazing it is that he’s managed to save the puppies.”

Mrs Bolton hopes to give the puppies to new homes once they are old enough.

What is a Fossa??

A relative of the mongoose, the fossa is unique to the forests of Madagascar, an African island in the Indian Ocean. Growing up to 6 feet (1.8 meters) long from nose to tail tip, and weighing up to 26 pounds (12 kilograms), the fossa is a slender-bodied catlike creature with little resemblance to its mongoose cousins.

It is the largest carnivore and top predator native to Madagascar and is known to feed on lemurs and most other creatures it can get its claws on, from wild pigs to mice. Unlike mongooses, and more like felines, the fossa has retractable claws and fearsome catlike teeth. Its coat is reddish brown and its muzzle resembles that of a dog.

The fossa is also equipped with a long tail that comes in handy while hunting and maneuvering amongst the tree branches. It can wield its tail like a tightrope walker's pole and moves so swiftly through the trees that scientists have had trouble observing and researching it.

The elusive fossa is a solitary animal and spends its time both in the trees and on the ground. It is active at night and also during the day. Females give birth to an annual litter of two to four young, and adulthood is reached after about three years.

Madagascar is home to an enormous variety of plant and animal life, and a number of species are unique to the island—including over 30 species of lemur, the fossa’s prey of choice. Explorers first arrived on the island some 2,000 years ago, and scientists believe that they would have been met by a bizarre assemblage of now-extinct beasts, including lemurs the size of gorillas and a ten-foot-tall (three-meter-tall) flightless bird.

Presently, fossas are endangered creatures due to habitat loss. Less than ten percent of Madagascar’s original, intact forest cover, the fossa’s only home, remains today.
